Why you should care that your site follows web standards

The Web Standards Project sums it up nicely when it states that "standards...ensure simple, affordable access to web technologies for all."

Not only do standards-compliant sites work on both the newest and oldest browsers, they open your site up to more than just people with the newest graphical browsers. Standards-compliant sites allow people using alternate browsers—voice browsers that read to people with sight impairments, Braille browsers, hand-held PDAs, and others—to access your information quickly and easily, without being shut out because you can't afford to design a separate site targeted to every possible browser.

In addition to accessibility, standards-compliant sites are easiest and fastest for search engines to index, which makes it that much more likely that your site will be seen by the people you're trying to reach.
